She goes solo again
Roopa in Suprabhat. Picture by Sanat Kr Sinha

Roopa Ganguly stole some time from her Hindi serials to stage a comeback in theatre last week. Her solo act Suprabhat, under Koushik Sen’s direction, at Sujata Sadan on Saturday turned the spotlight back on the (now) Mumbai resident.

Translated from Franca Rame’s Waking Up by Jaya Mitra, Suprabhat centres around factory worker Lisa, a puppet in a mechanical set-up.

“It’s almost after five months that Suprabhat was staged again and I had butterflies in my stomach. I was all the more nervous because there are no other characters in the play. Though I didn’t have much time, I managed to go through the play once in two hours. But I must say the response from the audience was fantastic!”she gushed.

“The character that I portray is very close to my heart. I can relate to her pain and thought process. She too is a working woman like me. Every morning she gets up from bed and wishes if all days would be Sunday so that she won’t have to work. There’s an underlying pathos in the dialogues, which may apparently seem humorous but actually depicts her inner turmoil,” said Roopa, all set to repeat her solo act in Bangalore on March 24.
