Sleuths blamed for son’s suicide

Biswanath Sadhukhan, the father of Krishnendu, alias Kartick, has blamed officials of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for driving his son to suicide. Kartick, one of the 11 accused in the Susil Pal murder case, hanged himself on Wednesday from the bedroom ceiling of his house on Jetia Road, Bally. The CID arrested Kartick on October 5 and said in its chargesheet that the body of Pal, a doctor with Serampore Walsh Hospital, had been ferried after his murder to the banks of a Howrah canal in an autorickshaw driven by Kartick.

Riz case hearing

Advocate-general Balai Ray submitted on Thursday that Calcutta High Court should not accept the investigation report that the CBI had placed before it on the Rizwanur Rahman death case. Taking part in the second day’s hearing, Ray claimed that the agency had no right to treat the petition by Rizwanur’s family as a complaint and lodge a murder case on its basis. Justice D. Dutta adjourned the hearing of the case till March 18.

Cheque fraud

Officials of Shyampukur police station arrested a youth, Sudip Dutta, on Thursday night for encashing a private bank’s bearer cheque for Rs 15 lakh, which he had found lying on the road, drawn in favour of a private telecom company in Delhi.

Jumps off roof

Narendra Choudhury, 45, a resident of Baikuntha Chatterjee Lane, Howrah, committed suicide by jumping off the roof of a five-storeyed building around 2pm on Thursday. Choudhury had been living on the fourth floor of the building for the past 30 years. Neighbours rushed him to Howrah District Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Trucks collide

Mohan Singh, 40, a truck driver’s help, was killed after two trucks collided at the Nimtala Ghat Street-BK Pal Avenue crossing late on Wednesday. Both drivers were arrested and the trucks were towed away to Jorabagan police station.

Girls injured

Three girls, aged between 10 and 12 years, were injured on Wednesday night after three youths from Mehendibagan hurled bombs on Phoolbagan Road. Around 9.30pm, the trio on a motorcycle were speeding down Phoolbagan Road when they knocked down Mohammad Mefooz near Beniapukur Road. The youths picked up a quarrel with Mefooz and his elder brother after the accident. They then left the spot, but returned for the bomb attack.
