290 bag jobs at B-school

The fears of a global downturn has failed to make a dent in the final placement of the Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta.

All but one student in the 291-strong batch of the institute’s postgraduate programme have been offered jobs across sectors. The final placement, that started with Slot Zero on March 8, came to a close on March 11.

“This year, 107 companies had come to the campus for recruitment,” said Krishnan Sekar, the external relations secretary of the institute.

A total of 243 offers — 153 during lateral placements and 90 pre-placement — had already been made before the start of the final placement.

The salaries on offer are more, compared with last year’s figures. The average domestic salary across all the slots was Rs 16.4 lakh per annum, around Rs 2 lakh more that last year’s Rs 14.17 lakh.

The highest domestic salary offered this year “was in the range of Rs 65 to 70 lakh” and the highest international salary offered was a record Rs 1.36 crore.

“This year, the majority of students from our institute preferred to stay in India,” said Sekar.

“A record of 22 new companies took part in the placement,” said S.D. Moitra, the chairperson of the placement panel. Procter & Gamble, Hindustan Unilever Limited, Nokia, ITC, Nestle, Asian Paints, Goldman Sachs, Merrill Lynch and Morgan Stanley are some of the participating firms.
