Man held for son’s murder

Alipurduar, March 12: A 30-year-old man was killed by his father at Uttar Panialguri village, 17km from here, last night.

Police have arrested Karneleus Karketta.

According to residents of the area, the victim Martin Karketta was a day labourer who often came home drunk and created a ruckus.

Around two last night, Martin, who was living separately, went to Karneleus’s house and started abusing his parents, demanding money. When Karneleus came out of the house and tried to control his son, Martin attacked his mother Karnela. Karneleus lost his temper and hit Martin on the head with a piece of timber. Martin died on the spot.

“Martin pinned me down and threatened to finish me off. A scuffle ensued between him and Karneleus,” said Karnela.“I pray that no one should have a son like Martin.”

What could be inferred from the comments made by relatives and neighbours was that they were not at all sad at Martin’s death. The residents alleged that his behaviour was intolerable and they had even tried to correct him. People requested the police to be lenient towards Karneleus who had suffered a lot in the hands of Martin. Unable to bear Martin’s torture, his wife Silvinush, along with three children, have been living at her father’s house in Kalkut Bast.

The police said the body has been sent to Alipurduar Hospital for post-mortem.
