Civic facelift for Siliguri park

Siliguri, March 12: Surya Sen Park in town will get a facelift next month, as the Siliguri Municipal Corporation (SMC) will introduce boating on a lake there next month.

The park will also have a 3D theatre, an open-air restaurant and a watchtower to be built in the next couple of months on the basis of a public-private partnership, said Munshi Nurul Islam, the SMC’s deputy mayor. “The budget for the project is so high that the SMC alone cannot bear the cost,” he said, justifying the joint venture.

The deputy mayor said the SMC has dug a 150m-long and 25m-wide artificial lake at the park and procured eight boats by spending Rs 30 lakh.

Located in Ward 10 in Mahakalpally on the bank of the Mahananda, the park was inaugurated by Sourav Ganguly on May 1, 2003.

Apart from Surya Sen Park, the SMC will also spend Rs 10 lakh for beautification projects in Children’s Park at College Para and Nandan Park at Milanpally. The projects, which will extend to adjacent areas of the approach to the Burdwan Road flyover, will entail tree plantation and setting up of children’s amenities.
