Health team on death probe

Cooch Behar, March 9: A four-member inquiry committee, headed by deputy chief medical officer of health Sumit Ganguly, visited Mathabhanga Subdivisional Hospital today where four women had died after childbirth within a few hours on March 6. They talked to gynaecologist Dr P. Nath, under whom the women had been admitted. Nath was the lone doctor manning the department that day.

The husbands of two women have lodged written complaints with the Mathabhanga police station against Nath. They have accused him of creating pressure on the families to shift the pregnant women to a private nursing home, subdivisional police officer Ananda Roy said.

The chief medical officer of health of Cooch Behar, S.K. Sil, said he was expecting the inquiry report within seven days. “I will comment only after that,” Sil said.

The DYFI, the youth wing of the CPM, has demanded the arrest of Trinamul Congress supporters who had ransacked the hospital on Friday.
