Three injured in accident

Siliguri, March 9: Three persons, including two police constables, were injured in an accident at Naxalbari late last night.

The accident occurred when a patrolling jeep of Naxalbari police station — parked by NH31C at Atal Tea Estate, located about 30 km from here — was rammed from behind by a Maruti Omni around 1am. Police seized the vehicle and arrested the driver, Manindra Kundu.

“The injured policemen are Arun Biswas and Ashok Bhattacharya,” said Pradip Dutta, the Siliguri deputy superintendent of police. The third one who suffered injuries in the accident is Babon Dutta who was in the Omni.

The police said Kundu and Dutta were returning to Siliguri in the vehicle after attending a marriage function. They suspect that Kundu was driving the vehicle in a drunken state.

Biswas, Bhattacharya and Dutta were sent to North Bengal Medical College and Hospital, although the constables were later shifted to a nursing home at Sevoke Road here.

“Both the constables are in the intensive care unit and the condition of Biswas is critical,” said Bijan Sarkar, the residential medical officer of the nursing home.
