Mishaps kill two on road

Road mishaps claimed the lives of two pedestrians and left a traffic constable injured in the city in the past 24 hours.

Basudha Bhowmik, 40, was killed when a bus on route DN18 hit her on Canal West Road, near RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, on Wednesday night.

Witnesses rushed Bhowmik, a resident of Gajipur, in North 24-Parganas, to the hospital, where she was declared dead. The bus was impounded but the driver fled.

Mohanlal Bhattacharjee, 55, was mowed down by a bus on route SD18 on JL Nehru Road on Wednesday night. Police said the driver lost control and hit the Behala resident from behind.

Bhattacharjee was taken to SSKM Hospital, where he died. The vehicle was seized but the driver fled.

Traffic constable Krishna Mahato fractured his right ankle after being hit by a WBSTC bus at the crossing of RG Kar Road and Canal East Road on Thursday afternoon. He has been admitted to RG Kar Hospital.
