BRIEFS

Three dacoits arrested

Alipurduar, March 5: Three dacoits were arrested at New Hasimara market last night. Police also seized two pipeguns and 18 rounds of live cartridges from them.

Sachin Gurung, Rajib Dasgupta, both residents of Naxalbari, and Prakash Dorji of Kalchini, were picked up before they could start the raid. The additional chief judicial magistrate here today remanded them in police custody for three days. A search operation has begun for other members of the gang who had escaped.

College row

Balurghat: Members of the Progressive Students’ Union (PSU) on Wednesday ransacked the principal’s office at Balurghat College. They were protesting against the college authorities’ refusal to allow 170 students to fill up forms for the Part I exam this year on charge of not attending stipulated number of classes. The PSU, however, denied the charge.

American fest

Siliguri: A four-day American Festival, the first in north Bengal, will begin here on Thursday. Organised by the consulate general in Calcutta in association with Siliguri College, the festival will have a display of books, student counselling, media workshop and a film fest of award-winning Afro-American movies.
