Balurghat, March 4: Ananda Pal, the owner of a private nursing home, and Prabhat Sarkar, the surgeon who had recently operated on a second year student of Gangarampur College, were today remanded in 14 days of judicial custody. The arrested are accused of removing a kidney of the student, Nirmal Barman.
SFI members had yesterday attacked Pal and Sarkar and ransacked the hospital, where Barman was admitted, after the news spread that the student’s kidney had been removed. Both were later rescued by police and taken into custody.
Pal and Sarkar were produced before the additional chief judicial magistrate of Gangarampur, Mohitosh Dutta, this morning. The judge observed that the charges were of “serious nature” and rejected the bail prayers. He asked the authorities to investigate the case with urgency.
District magistrate Swapan Chatterjee said he had ordered an inquiry into the charges. He has also asked chief medical officer of health Bhusan Mahapatra to personally examine the records of the nursing home.
Bengal minister Narayan Biswas had earlier demanded an inquiry and sought punishment of the guilty. He, however, did not approve of the attack on the nursing home and the doctor.
