Ulfa rebels killed in encounter

Dibrugarh, March 4: The 28 Battalion of the Ulfa today suffered yet another blow with police eliminating two listed cadre in an early morning operation at Thanubam village under Barbaruah police station in Dibrugarh district of Upper Assam.

The cadres were identified as self-styled sergeant Tapan Baruah alias Arun Baruah and corporal Parikshit Chettry.

Two pistols, some ammunition, explosives, three cellphones and some documents were found from the encounter site.

Dibrugarh superintendent of police Anurag Agarwal said the operation was carried out following a tip-off about the presence of a group of Ulfa militants in the village.

“Our men were fired upon from a house around 3.45 this morning to which we retaliated and in the ensuing gunbattle, two of them were killed. A search is on to trace the others,” Agarwal said.
