Doctor faces kidney slur

Balurghat, March 3: The relatives of a college student and supporters of the SFI ransacked a private nursing home in Gangarampur today and beat up a doctor, accusing him of removing one of the kidneys of the youth.

The mob also attacked a police jeep when the accused doctor and the owner of the nursing home were being escorted out.

Nirmal Barman, a resident of the Nandanpur gram panchayat area and a second-year student of Gangarampur College, had been admitted to the nursing home on January 21 with acute pain in his stomach.

The youth was operated upon on the same day and released on January 30.

“I had initially thought that the youth had a problem with his appendix. During the operation, it was discovered that puss had formed in the right side of his stomach because of some infection. I just drained out the puss,” the doctor said.

He added that the kidney of the youth could not be located after an USG was done on February 12 when he came for the follow-up.

“The patient was advised to get an USG done from a better place. They came with a USG report done from a private nursing home in Malda that, too, could not locate the kidney. The kidney might be hidden or might be too small to be visible,” the doctor said.

The accused denied the allegation that the youth’s kidney had been removed. “A proper medical test from a reliable place will authenticate my claim,” he said.

SFI leader Jagannath Ghosh demanded an inquiry and punishment for the doctor and the nursing home. “The doctor is involved with a kidney transplantation racket,” the leader of the students’ wing of the CPM said.

The youth’s father, Nripen Barman, a farmer, has made a similar demand.

The inspector-in-charge of the Gangarampur police station, Biswanath Guha, said no FIR had been lodged against the doctor so far.

“We have taken the surgeon and the owner of the nursing home in our custody for their safety and security,” said Guha.
