One of the most vibrant and dynamic of movements, the women’s movement in India has produced hundreds of images that bear messages supporting causes like violence against women, dowry, rape, gender-sensitive laws, political participation and so on. Unfortunately, most of them have not been preserved well; in fact, many have been lost or destroyed. Zubaan, a New Delhi-based feminist publishing house, attempts to retrieve this valuable archive and in showcasing it, to present a selection of posters that demonstrates an alternative aesthetics and politics, besides throwing light on the movement. Poster Women, featuring a collection of over 1200 posters, traces the history of activism, highlighting crucial women’s issues and problems that remain sadly relevant to this day. To be inaugurated this evening at 6 by Vidya Munshi. Special guest: Maitreyee Chatterjee. Hosted by Swayam and Zubaan.
