Medal rush for state in Fed Cup

Jamshedpur, Feb. 27: It is raining medals for the state athletics team in the three-day Federation Cup National Senior Athletics Championship in Bhopal.

The state athletes bagged four gold, two bronze and one silver medals on the first day of the event yesterday.

To start off the proceedings, Amarjeet Singh performed brilliantly in the men’s triple jump to clinch the gold. Amarjeet jumped a 16.19m bettering his nearest rival, B. Mathew of Indian Navy to bag the medal.

The state’s women athletes too did not lag behind their male counterparts as Sinimole Paulose clinched gold in the women’s 800m sprint. Sahana Kumari won a gold in the women’s high jump event. Sahana jumped 1.81m bettering Siji N.K. of Kerala.

The state athletes again clinched the first places in the men’s 100m finals, when B.G. Nagraj raced ahead of his opponents to bag the gold. Nagraj timed 10.70 seconds to better Jamaluddin of Karnataka, who clocked 10.81 seconds. Next, state athlete Ritesh Anand romped home with a third place win in the same category, missing out the second with a timing of 10.87 seconds.

The dominance of athletes from the state was well evident as Ajay Kumar Naik, also of Jharkhand, also performed well. Though he could not bag a medal, he managed the fifth place in the event.

Though Nagraj won the finals, Jamaluddin had secured the first place in the semi-finals, while Nagraj and Ritesh had come second and third respectively. A keen competition in the finals ensured Nagraj’s victory, officials added.

State athlete Santosh Patel managed to come third in the men’s 5000m run with a timing of 14:24:74 seconds.

Preeti L. Rao also managed a bronze medal in the women’s 5000m run with a timing of 17:12:95 seconds. Preeja Shreedharan of Kerala came second with a timing of 16:48:69seconds. State athletics association officials said that the performance of Jharkhand athl- etes was quite positive in the tournament.
