Rally to protest deaths

Imphal, Feb. 26 (PTI): Security personnel shot two alleged militants, Th. Suranjoy and Y. Dhamen, at Kongba in Manipur’s Imphal East district. However their families have denied that they were rebels.

Official sources said a team of police and Assam Rifles commandos shot the two last night after they failed to stop their car during a routine check and opened fire when challenged. A 9mm pistol and some ammunition were recovered from them, sources said.

Family members and friends said Suranjoy owned a shop near Manipur University and had gone to buy chicken with his friend Dhamen.

The people of Imphal West district, from where the two hailed, took out a procession to the official residence of chief minister Okram Ibobi Singh to lodge a complaint. Police stopped the demonstrators nearly 100 metres from the residence, as prohibitory orders are in force there.

Bus mishap

Six persons were killed and 31 injured when a bus overturned at Liromoba in Arunachal Pradesh, official sources said today. The accident occurred on Sunday.
