Artisans unite on fair platform

Ranchi, Feb. 24: Here one can shop for goodies ranging between Rs 5 and Rs 40,000. The Khadi Mela is proving to be the destination for shopaholics.

Seventy-year-old Rakhu Bai, who is part of this mela for the first time has come from Dwarka, Gujarat, and is delighted to be here.

At her stall one can find bed covers, wall hangings, lehanga-cholis, colourful belts and armlets. People are also amazed to see the old lady at work.

“This is our family business and I have been doing this for the past 60 years,” said Rakhu Bai while arranging the goods.

Wooden articles like pen stands, flower vases, bangles and photo frames were on sale at the Varanasi stall. The costliest item there was a wooden wine bottle for Rs 2,000, which had fine carvings. “People are not ready to spend money on items like these,” said Godavari Singh, the owner of the stall.

The Khadi Mela has given an exposure to artisans from across the country. Rinki Devi, who has come from Rajpura village of the Madhubani district, was seen selling her Mithila paintings.

These were done on small cards and also on silk saris. “The painted saris are a bit costlier but we are still getting orders,” she said. The colours used in these paintings are from juices of various leaves and flowers. A section was especially dedicated to promote Jharkhand tourism.
