Suicide whiff
Snehasis Sarkar, 25, an employee of a private firm, was found dead in his Baguiati residence in EA block on Sunday afternoon. Police said Sarkar’s mother-in-law came to the house in the evening to find the doors bolted. The front door was broken and Sarkar was found dead. A preliminary probe revealed that Sarkar’s wife Poulomi had gone to her parents’ house at Shyamnagar on Saturday. Investigating officers said it was apparently a case of suicide. The body has been sent for post-mortem.
Hit by van
A 45-year-old man sustained injuries after being hit by a Matador on Strand Road on Sunday afternoon. The man was rushed to a local nursing home, where he was treated. The van driver managed to flee.
Extra coach
The Geetanjali Express (2860/2859) from Howrah will have an extra sleeper-class coach from March 1 to March 31, a South-Eastern Railway official said on Sunday. If the addition is a success, the service may be extended beyond March.
Baby drowns
A one-and-a-half-year-old baby drowned in a ditch in front of its house in Liluah’s Chowkpara-Bhattanagar area on Sunday. The child’s mother had left it alone in a room to go to the kitchen. She returned 15 minutes later to find the baby missing.
