Suicide after rap for playing with boys

Barasat/Krishnagar, Feb. 24: A Bangladeshi girl hanged herself in the hostel of her North 24-Parganas school after the headmistress scolded her for playing volleyball with boys outside.

No suicide note was found in Moumita Sarkar’s room but police said the Class XI student of Khatura Uchcha Balika Vidyalaya in Gobardanga, 40km from Calcutta, had been warned against mixing with local youths.

According to an officer of the Habra police station, near Gobardanga, Moumita shut herself in her room after the rap from her teacher.

Hostel-mates began looking for her when she didn’t turn up for dinner and found her hanging from the ceiling of the reading room.

Habra police sent the body for post-mortem. Moumita’s parents in Bangladesh have been informed.

Headmistress Chaitali Chakrabarty said another teacher had seen Moumita play with some local youths on a field outside the hostel. “Later, I called her and warned her against mixing with the youths.”

In Nadia’s Hanskhali, a 15-year-old drank pesticide after being allegedly beaten by her younger sister and getting a cold shoulder from her mother. Hanskhali officer in-charge Sujit Bhattacharjee said Supriya Biswas had told her mother about being slapped and hit with sandals by younger sister Shraboni (name changed).
