A tale of two cities

The play: Video, an original play in English by Tin Can.

The stage: GD Birla Sabhagar, till February 24, 7pm.

The plot: The dreams and struggles of two boys living in two different cities. While one is trying to distance himself from the razzle-dazzle of Mumbai, the other is a college dropout who dopes, hallucinates and dreams of becoming a magician in Calcutta.

Both characters meet but under ironic circumstances. Set against the hubbub of Mumbai and Calcutta, the play focuses on the wild and ambitious youth from both cities.

“It’s about youngsters living an urban life and their muffled dreams,” explains Soumyak Kanti De Biswas, who has scripted and directed Video.

The cast and crew: A multi-tasking team of 40 in the age group of 16 to 30.

The sight: An electronic look, sound and feel. The play weaves in cinematic elements with live video projections as the backdrop.

The sound: Video has both live and recorded music. Anjum Katyal belts out an English number, written by her for Video. The other highlight of the play is a drum recital by four dhakis.

The style: Roshni Bose, NIFT graduate, has designed the costumes. Some of the outfits will have a street look, while others will be flamboyant to complement the imaginary characters that come into play.
