Six picked up in bank draft case

Malda, Feb. 21: Police have arrested one more person and detained five in connection with the demand draft scam which was unearthed recently. All of them are residents of Old Malda.

The employees of Syndicate Bank had discovered on February 18 that three demand drafts, each for Rs 20 lakh but bearing the same number, had been sent to them for clearing.

It was later found that the draft had been stolen from the HDFC Bank’s Behrampore branch and colour-Xeroxed by the accused who then withdrew Rs 31.5 lakh in the name of some individuals and companies.

“We had arrested Biplab Ghosh yesterday in connection with the case and after interrogating him, picked up his brother-in-law Praksh Ghosh,” said Malda superintendent of police Satyajit Bandyopadhyay.

While Prakash has been remanded in police custody, Biplab is in jail. “Police sought Prakash’s remand since he knows a lot about the racket. We are now looking for the original copy of the demand draft and trying to find out whether it too has been encashed,” said Bandyopadhyay.

He added that there was a possibility of a “bigger racket” being active in stealing unfilled bank drafts.
