The much awaited all-Bengal inter-school spelling competition, SpelLinc 2007, was held on January 29 at the Mahajati Sadan in Calcutta. This year saw many new entrants.
The contest was held in two phases, the first was the preliminary round where the SpelLinc group visited 160 schools across Calcutta and 15 districts including Burdwan, Nadia, 24 Parganas (N), 24 Parganas (S), Midnapore (E), Midnapore (W), Birbhum, Bankura, Hooghly and Malda. Students from each school were given a set of spellings and the top three scorers were then selected to represent their school in the SpelLinc grand finals we were delighted to make the cut!
The second leg of the contest began with the qualifiers of the first round assembling at the grand finals, each team (school) being given 20 words to spell. Eight teams were selected from the preliminary qualifiers, who then climbed to the final round, from which the top schools were adjudged the winners. We were ecstatic because we made sure that Modern High School became the proud owner of the trophy and the rolling trophy.
We were awarded cash prizes, certificates, gift hampers as well as the trophies. This is the second time we have won the SpelLinc in the last two years. We see no reason to not repeat the feat next year, especially because we want to keep the rolling trophy forever.
