Sketch helps net poacher

Guwahati, Feb. 18: Police today arrested a poacher, Sunu Gogoi, from Dagaon village under Bokakhat police station, identifying him with the help of sketches by Calcutta artist Debasish Banerjee.

Police sources said Sunu, Adhir Dutta of Jonali Nagar in Golaghat and Naren Bora of Kalyanpur, Bokakhat, were involved in the brutal killing of the rhino and its calf at Methoni tea estate last month.

Dutta and Bora have also been arrested and the trio has confessed to their crime.

Banerjee, who had earlier helped the police in many cases, had made three sketches of the poachers. The artist had camped at Kaziranga for several days and drawn the sketches after talking to villagers who saw the poachers.

The police claimed to have identified these faces. One has already surrendered and Sunu was arrested today. “We are hunting for the third,” a police officer at Bokakhat said.
