‘Buddhababu, wake up!’

What pollution peril do you face? Who do you blame for the air pollution in town? Metro readers have responded with a flood of e-mails. All blame it on apathy — of the government and the citizen. We pick a few letters...

Living in Burrabazar is like living in hell. The harmful fumes from buses and other vehicles affect the throat, lungs and heart. The complete absence of greenery compounds the problem. Walking on the roads is a nightmare, thanks to the congestion and the vehicular pollution.

Pooja Agarwal

I live on Moore Avenue and work on Prince Anwar Shah Road. The two-kilometre drive down NSC Bose Road — that takes 45 minutes every morning — is an ordeal. Stuck in traffic jams, we inhale all those toxic fumes emitted by the unruly autowallahs who have found a foster father in our dear transport minister! No wonder our sons and daughters are all asthmatic and ailing. Is conversion to a cleaner fuel costlier than the lives of our children?

Debarya Banerjee

Government agencies are to blame for the poison air choking the city. They refuse to take action against polluting buses, taxis and autos because of political affiliation. If they don’t take corrective steps now, what will happen to our children? Just think of what air they will breathe in...

A. Karnani

I blame the West Bengal government for the air pollution in and around Calcutta.

Subrata Chakravarty

Well, we all are aware that the state government is to be blamed for the pollution peril. Our chief minister is least bothered about human health and lives. The government needs to value the lives of citizens.

Purnima

The citizens of Calcutta and their “cholchhe cholbe” attitude have brought things to such a pass. A general sense of self-centred apathy is to blame for the alarming pollution levels in town. Nobody seems to care and if someone does protest and call police, they look the other way.

D. Chaudhry

The West Bengal government is prompt in suppressing protests against forcible seizure of land, but does nothing to stop pollution by the buses, autos, trucks and taxis. The whole city is suffering. People are dying. Wake up, Buddhababu! Have the courage to act.
