Dibrugarh, Feb. 17: Favourites Dibrugarh University defeated Assam University, Silchar, by a margin of four wickets to win the first Girin Baruah and Pankaj Dev memorial Assam inter-university cricket tournament at the Dibrugarh District Sports Association (DDSA) outdoor stadium today.
The district sports association had organised the meet with assistance from the Assam Cricket Association (ACA).
Winning the toss, Assam University decided to bat first and was all out for 104 in 28.2 overs. Sukanta Dey was the topscorer with 21 runs, while Somit Das contributed 18.
Rajendra Lal picked up three wickets giving away 10 runs for Dibrugarh University, while Amit Basfore took two for 21. Promising off-spinner Prasanta Sonowal also took two wickets but proved to be a bit expensive, giving away 30 runs.
The Dibrugarh boys, who have dominated the tournament so far, achieved the target in 27.2 overs, losing six wickets in the process.
Rajendra, who had earlier picked up three wickets, was also the topscorer for his team, scoring 29. Bharat Newar was the other notable contributor with 22. For Assam University, Nihar Paul, Somit Das, Farid Ahmed Laskar and Abhitabh Paul took one wicket each.

Guwahati pair Bastab Neog and Bibhor Swaroop today defeated another Guwahati pair 15-1, 15-12 to enter the final of the 5th all-Assam Doubles Badminton Championship under way at Dhubri Veterinary Ground, says our correspondent.
The pair will meet Pankaj Kumar Das and Srimanta Saharia of Mangaldoi, who defeated the Bongaigaon pair 15-7, 15-4. |
