Siliguri, Feb. 10: Prasenjit is scouting for land for a film city.
The actor has already visited Milanmore in the Champasari panchayat area and adjacent New Chumta Tea Garden. Both the places are located 15km from here.
“The proposed film city will attract not only directors from Bollywood, but international names as well,” said Prasenjit, who is working on a tie-up with a private organisation to set up the film city. He was, however, reluctant to divulge more information on the venture.
Earlier, during his visit to Siliguri in December, the actor had said the outdoor locales in north Bengal were breathtaking and if a proper infrastructure was set up for indoor shoots, directors of films, telefilms and serials would flock to the area. According to officials of Siliguri Jalpaiguri Development Authority (SJDA), the proposed film city requires about 15 to 20 acres.
“Siliguri is second home to me and my colleagues in Tollyganj,” the actor said at Naxalbari, about 35km from here this morning. He was there to attend an awareness programme on rural sanitation organised by Siliguri Mahakuma Parishad at the Nandaprasad High School ground.
The actor is currently here for the shooting of an untitled film directed by Swapan Saha. After attending the programme at Naxalbari, he left for Calcutta by the afternoon flight today. He will return on Wednesday and continue his shooting till February 20. During his stay, he is expected to visit some of the other proposed sites.
Prasenjit’s initiative has been welcomed by Asok Bhattacharya, the Bengal urban development minister, who is also the chairman of SJDA. “When he approached me with the idea of setting up a film city here, I immediately assured him of all help,” Bhattacharya said.
“Once the project materialises, it will be an added attraction for the town and will boost the tourism prospects of the region. Job opportunities too will increase,” the minister added.
