Maharashtra shine

Guwahati, Feb. 6: Maharashtra won both the boys’ and girls’ titles in the 19th Sub- junior National Kabaddi Championship that concluded at the Nehru Stadium this evening.

In the finals, the Maharashtra boys defeated their Manipur counterparts 18-14, while the girls outplayed defending champions Rajasthan 27-15. Trailing by 10 points at half time, the Manipur boys failed to stage a comeback in the second half.

The girls’ final was a drab affair with the Rajasthan girls putting up a weak fight.

The Maharashtra boys’ team entered the final defeating Delhi 18-12, while Manipur edged past hosts Assam 38-35 in the semifinal.

Assam and Delhi bagged the bronze.

In the Assam-Manipur semifinal, the regulation time ended in a 29-29 draw. There was a scuffle between the team officials and match officials, leading to the suspension of Manipur coach Mukunda Singh from the tournament. The tiebreakers also ended in a 6-6 draw after which golden raid was played.

Manipur capitalised on winning the toss to raid first and clinched the match by three points.

In the girls’ semifinals, Rajasthan sailed past Hyderabad 27-16 and Maharastra outplayed Bihar 33-14. Hyderabad and Bihar won the bronze.

Prakash Ajuwala of Maharashtra and Kamalesh Garewal of Rajasthan were adjudged best boy and girl catchers, while Dipak Kalita of Assam and Uma Laskar of Maharastra were named best boy and girl raiders.

Nagaland was named the Most Disciplined Team.

The organisers faced problems last night when the caterers locked the dining hall before dinner, demanding clearance of outstanding dues.

The dining hall was finally opened late last night after the organisers reportedly paid up. However, several teams were forced to arrange dinner outside the venue at their own expense.
