More arms & men for Kaziranga

Guwahati, Feb. 6: A day after offering to give up his portfolio for failing to curb rhino killing in Kaziranga National Park, forest minister Rockybul Hussain today indicated he would fight rather than quit.

The minister visited the park this morning and ordered deployment of 100 more guards to battle poachers, who killed one more rhino in the park yesterday.

Park officials said following a meeting, the minister asked the home department to immediately send 100 additional armed guards and 200 .303 rifles to replace the .315 rifles. These guards will be in addition to the 12 armed guards deployed yesterday.

To make vigilance an attractive occupation, the minister announced free rations for the forest guards.

More anti-poaching ca-mps, some along National Highway 37, will be set up soon.
