Infants rescued

Two girls, aged six months and 15 days, were rescued from Kamrabad market, in Sonarpur, on Tuesday morning. At 10.30am, a woman asked a vegetable seller to keep a basket and a six-month-old girl, saying she would be back in a while. The trader later found the second infant in the basket. e informed the members of a local club after the woman failed to return. Police later handed over the babies to Sukanya, a Salt Lake-based rescue centre. “We are probing the matter,” said Praveen Kumar, the superintendent of South 24-Parganas police.

Suicide

Madhushree Roy, 37, committed suicide by slashing her wrists with a blade at her Garcha Road residence on Tuesday. The body was found around 8am by the help. No suicide note was found. Madhushree’s father told police that she had been married twice but had no children. Her first husband died a few years ago and her second marriage ended in a divorce.

Lynched

Abdul Khaleq, 40, died after being beaten up by a mob that suspected him of being a thief. Police said a few residents of Kusumba, on the southern fringes of the city, beat up Abdul after he was caught removing empty drums from a godown of Rajpur-Sonarpur municipality. He was then taken to the municipal office. Civic chairman Kamal Ganguly said Abdul was “immediately” removed to MR Bangur Hospital, where doctors declared him dead. Police are looking for the people who beat him up.

Cold victim

Babulal, 36, a porter, was found in a comatose condition on Radha Bazar Street around 2pm on Tuesday. He was taken to Medical College and Hospital, where doctors declared him dead. Police suspect he died of cold. The body has been sent for post-mortem.

Hut fire

A fire broke out in a hut near Kidderpore tram depot on Tuesday morning. Two tenders doused the blaze. There were no casualties. Fire department officials said a leak in the cooking gas pipe had led to the blaze.
