Two teachers of Sri Sitala Balika Vidalaya at Shibpur were killed and several students were injured when the bus they were travelling in smashed into a tree on NH2, at Piharpara, near Serampore, on Tuesday.

Five teachers and 73 students of the school were going for a picnic to Dihara, under Singur police station. The driver lost control while trying to avoid collision with another bus while negotiating a sharp turn. He and his help fled.

Ajay Dubey, 35, and Ajit Singh, 39, died on the spot. The injured students were taken to Serampore Walsh Hospital and nursing homes. Some of the students were later shifted to Howrah District Hospital and Medical College and Hospital.

A teacher, whose leg was fractured in the mishap, alleged that the driver was drunk and was speeding.
