Kamal, Poulami champions

Siliguri: A. Sharath Kamal and Poulami Ghatak are the new reigning national table tennis champions. Conceding only one game in five each, they defeated Sourav Chakraborty and Anindita Chakraborty respectively to win the singles titles on the concluding day of the 69th Senior National & Inter-state Table Tennis Championships played at the Siliguri Indoor Stadium.

Both of them won four gold medals each by winning all the events, including the final team matches, in the seven-day tournament. Kamal partnered Subhajit Saha to beat Sourav Chakraborty and Anirban Nandi 9-11, 11-8, 11-9, 11-7 & 11-9 in the men’s doubles.

Kamal also partnered Poulami to defeat Subhajit and Nandita Saha 11-9, 3-11, 11-9, 11-4 & 11-6 in the mixed doubles final. His fourth gold came earlier as a member of the PSPB team that defeated the RSPB in the team championships.

Poulami also of PSPB picked up her first gold defeating North Bengal in the final of the women’s team event. She partnered Mouma Das in a gruelling women’s doubles final on Saturday, ultimately defeating Susmita Ray and Mousumi Paul 11-8, 5-11, 11-5, 11-6, 14-16, 10-12 & 11-4.
