Schools for backward classes

Malda, Feb. 1: Two residential schools under CBSE will come up at Bolpur in Birbhum and Buniyadpur in South Dinajpur for Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe students in the current fiscal, Bengal minister for backward classes Jogesh Burman said here today.

Already there are five such schools, named Ekalavya Vidyalaya and funded by the Union government, in other districts of the state.

The Centre sanctions Rs 5 crore for the construction of such schools and spends Rs 1,600 on each student per year.

Not more than 40 students, including boys and girls, are accommodated in each class.

Apart from this, the department for backward classes will set up nine Bengali-medium schools in the state where students will be able to study from Classes V-XII.

The West Bengal Board of Secondary Education, too, has sanctioned five schools for the current fiscal.

Seventy per cent seats in the schools are reserved for students belonging to SC and ST categories.

The minister said distribution of SC and ST certificates would be streamlined in the state.

“My office regularly get complaints of fake certificates. Some rackets issuing fake certificates are active mainly in Malda and Murshidabad. A committee headed by the secretary of my department has been set up to verify the certificates promptly and efficiently.”

Earlier, subdivisional officers used to handle the issue that took a long time to accomplish.
