Top Qaida chief ‘dead’

Washington, Feb. 1 (Reuters): There are indications that senior al Qaida leader Abu Laith al Libi is dead and no reason to doubt reports that he is, a western official said yesterday, following reports of a suspected US missile strike in Pakistan this week.

The official declined to discuss circumstances of Libi's death. “At this point there is no reason to doubt that he is dead. There are indications that he is in fact dead,” the official said. The SITE Intelligence Group cited a Qaida linked website as announcing the death. The western official described Libi as a“veteran jihadist”.
