Bodies found in flat, off road

The decomposed body of 67-year-old Bimalendu Chatterjee was recovered from his apartment in Chitpur on Sunday morning. Residents of the apartment block alerted the police after a stench started emanating from the flat. A preliminary probe revealed that Chatterjee, who had been living alone since his wife’s death, might have died of a cardiac arrest. Police did not find any injury marks on the body. he body of an unidentified woman in her early 30s was found in a bush beside VIP Road near Golghata on Sunday morning. “We have alerted all neighbouring police stations about the dead woman dressed in a blue sari,” said Ranjit Chakrabarty, the officer-in-charge of Lake Town police station. “The body has been sent for post-mortem,” said an officer.

Hunger strike

More than a dozen Trinamul Congress activists, arrested on charges of spreading violence during the bandh called by Mamata Banerjee on November 12, started an “indefinite hunger strike” at Alipore Central jail on Sunday. They are demanding that the hearing of their cases be held on a regular basis. The accused have been charged with rioting and damaging government and public property.

Jewellery robbed

A watchman allegedly decamped with jewellery worth Rs 6 lakh from a house in Vivekananda Colony in Liluah on Saturday, when the two women who lived there were attending a wedding. The women registered a complaint with Bally police station on Sunday.

Road death

A 26-year-old unidentified youth was killed after the motorcycle he was riding collided with a truck in Howrah’s Malipanchghara, on Benaras Road, on Sunday evening. Police said the youth lost control while overtaking a car. The truck driver fled.

Flight returns

An Agartala-bound Jet Airways flight, carrying 173 passengers, returned to Calcutta after failing ed to land at the destination due to bad weather. Airport officials said the flight took off at 1.35pm but had to return at 3.20pm. It later took off for Agartala at 6pm.

Police remand

Shabbir Alam, against whom a number of murder and extortion cases are pending, was brought to the city from Uttar Pradesh on Sunday. He has been remanded in police custody till May 30. Shabbir, alias Ullu Raju, was arrested in Meerut on Saturday. He had been staying in Meerut for the past six months.

Extortionist

Faiz Ahmed Khan, an extortionist of the port area, was arrested in Ekbalpore on Sunday afternoon.
