Top seed upset

In a major upset, girls’ top seed Grace Sari Ysidora of Indonesia was shown the door by eighth seeded Kyra Shroff of India 6-1,7-6 (7-4) in the quarter finals of the ONGC ITF Juniors tennis championships at the DKS complex on Wednesday. Kyra, now, meets seventh seed Rishika Sunkara from Delhi, India in the semi-finals. The other semi-final will be played between Indians Rashmi Teltumbde and Sweta Solanki.

National TT

The Bengal men’s and women’s teams for the 69th Senior National inter-state table tennis championship to be held in Siliguri from Sunday to February 2, were announced on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, according to a WBTTA release, Soumik Dey Sarkar and Kaushik Dey — who took part in the BTTA-organised state table tennis championships in November — apologised to the WBTTA and sought registration. The TTFI has disaffiliated the BTTA.

Jhulan feted

Jhulan Goswami, adjudged ICC woman Cricketer of the Year in 2007, was presented an award of Rs 2 lakh by the West Bengal sports department at a function in the Netaji Indoor Stadium on Wednesday. Goswami was handed the cash and a diamond chain by former Sheriff Chuni Goswami. External Affairs minister Pranab Mukherjee and state sports minister Subhas Chakraborty were also present.
