KAHAANI MEIN TWIST

2008 is an action-packed year for you, starting with Rama Rama Kya Hai Dramaaa… That’s right. I have a number of exciting releases this year. In Rama Rama..., I have to match comic skills with the likes of Anupam Kher and Rajpal Yadav (smiles).

Then you have Mithya...

Rajat Kapoor’s Mithya is one film that I am really looking forward to. The film should release sometime in February. I have a career-defining role in Mithya in which I share screen space with Naseeruddin Shah and Ranvir Shorey. Then there is a thriller, again with Naseeruddin Shah. Its working title is Maharathi. So there’s an eclectic mix of films in my kitty for 2008.

What about Singh is Kinng? We had a hectic six-week schedule of Singh is Kinng in Australia. The experience was wonderful. I have great co-stars in the form of Akshay (Kumar) and Katrina (Kaif). I love Australia and I believe that if you breathe better air, you become a better person and that’s what happened to me in Australia (laughs). I can’t talk about the film or my role in it because we have been requested by the makers not to say anything at the moment.

The response to your role in Strangers In the Night (One of the 10 films in Dus Kahaniyaan) is great... It feels great. I believe it has been one of my most mature performances. It was wonderful to be directed by Sanjay Gupta. I was away shooting in Australia for a very long time and watched Dus Kahaniyaan only at the premiere. Thereafter I watched it with the audience in a theatre in Chennai and was elated with the response I got for my performance. Looking back, choosing to do this film was a good decision.

Your short story was also one of the few in the film which had a genuine twist at the end… Yes it was (smiles). The narrative unfolded in such a manner that it was difficult for the audience to gauge what the end was going to be. Full marks to Sanjay for handling it in such a mature manner.

How was it working with Mahesh Manjrekar? Mahesh is a very easy person to work with. Despite Strangers… being a female-dominated story, he managed to hold his own and leave an impression. He is a great actor and an immensely talented director.

Was it easy doing a 10-minute film? You sometimes read a novel while at other times you prefer reading short stories. I approached the film keeping this in mind. It’s an innovative genre and considering that the film managed to do pretty well shows that the audience has paved the way for similar films. That’s a good sign. And it worked for me too because here was a film that required three days of shooting instead of 30 (laughs).
