Siliguri, Jan. 10: Around 10,000 residents of the town walked this evening to extend support to the 69th National Table Tennis Championship to be held for the first time in Siliguri from January 27 to February 2.
“We have proved that Siliguri is the land of table tennis, where thousands can walk only to promote the game,” said Asok Bhattacharya, the Bengal urban development minister. “It is time for us to show the rest of the country how successfully we can organise the event.”
The procession started from outside the Kanchenjunga Stadium around 3.15pm. After crossing Kutchery Road, Hashmi Chawk, Mahabirsthan Flyover, Deshbandhupara Main Road, it reached Siliguri Indoor Stadium, the venue of the championship, around 4.15pm. The rally took an hour to cover the almost 2km stretch. Apart from the minister, Mantu Ghosh and Subhajit Saha (the two Arjuna awardees from north Bengal in table tennis), paddlers from 20 coaching camps, students from 30 schools and residents of the town participated in the procession.
“I was there to see my heroes,” said Debargha Mukhuti, a paddler from a coaching camp in the town.
Mayor Bikash Ghosh along with several councillors were also present.
