Break-in at ATM in Gangtok

Gangtok, Jan. 9: An unidentified person tried to break open the vault of the ATM of United Commercial Bank (UCO) near the Gangtok post office at Paljor Stadium Road last night. It is still not known if the robbery was successful.

Engineers from Diabolt, which maintains the ATM, could not open the vault as the keypad used to punch in the code has been damaged.

S. Lama, the senior manager of UCO Bank, said fire-cutters from Calcutta have been called to open the vault. It will be a couple of days before they arrive, he added.


Car on fire

Gangtok: A WagonR owned by Mahindra Adhikari, was set on fire by a gang of criminals on Tuesday at Chanatar, Rangpo, in East Sikkim. One of the suspects, Rajiv Sharma, has been arrested.


Rebel arrest

Alipurduar: Pravat Das, a member of the KLO, was arrested on Tuesday from Dakshin Parokata in the Samuktala police station area. He had been absconding since 2002. Das was remanded in 14 days of jail custody by the court of additional chief judicial magistrate of Alipurduar on Wednesday.


Jumbo dead

Alipurduar: The body of a sub-adult tusker was found in the Gadadhar beat under Buxa Tiger Reserve (West) on Wednesday evening. The field director of the reserve, L.G. Lepcha said according to preliminary investigation, the tusker died after an intra-herd fight. A post-mortem will be held tomorrow.
