Teacher accused of beating girl

Balurghat, Jan. 4: A Class IX girl of Nalanda Vidyapith here was hospitalised today after she was beaten up by a teacher Kartik Roy. The girl’s mother has filed a police complaint against Roy, who allegedly had slapped the student in class yesterday.

The girl’s mother, a resident of North Chakvabani Para in town, said she had injuries to her head and hand.

According to the girl’s uncle, she had been taking private tuition on science subjects from Roy since last January. “She discontinued with the coaching after a few months. And since then the teacher had been behaving rudely with her,” Banerjee said. “She told us that when there was a noise in the classroom yesterday, Roy had suddenly slapped her on the head and on the left hand, ripping off a nail in one of the fingers.”

The girl’s father, who is a constable posted with the Balurghat police station, was away in Calcutta on official duty.

The teacher could not be contacted. The headmaster of the school, Niharendu Roy, described the incident as unfortunate. He said he was looking into the complaints filed by the girl’s guardians.

The inspector-in-charge of the Balurghat police station, Dharmadeb Chatterjee, said “an investigation is on.”
