Folk fest on tea gardens

Siliguri, Jan. 4: Tea garden workers and forest villagers of north Bengal will come together to celebrate the second Lok-Sanskriti Utsav from January 28-30.The fest will be held at Naxalbari Nandaprasad High School ground, about 40km from here.

The state information and cultural department will organise the fest in association with the backward classes welfare department.

The organisers said the main objective of the festival is to promote the cultural heritage of the gardens.

Mani Thapa, the sabhadhipati of Siliguri Mahakuma Parishad, said: “The welfare department is going to spend Rs 10 lakh for the festival. We will invite all the tea gardens as well as the forest villagers and members of self-help groups.”

Folk artists from different gardens and fringe villages will perform at the fest. There will be seminars on the present condition of the gardens.
