Ashoklal no more
Former East Bengal captain Ashoklal Banerjee, popularly known as Headmaster in the Maidan, passed away on Thursday at a city hospital. He was 63. Banerjee, who is survived by wife and two daughters, was a member of the East Bengal side that clinched the Calcutta league title a record six times in the 70s.
School Games
About 2000 participants from different states will participate in the 53rd National School Games from January 7 to 11 at Rabindra Sarobar Stadium. The five-day meet will have a mascot a tiger named Sherru.
Junior cricket
Mainland Sambaran Cricket Academy beat Vijay SC by nine wickets in a CAB junior (110 points) match on Thursday. In a 95 points match, Videocon School of Cricket beat Karthik Bose Memorial by 81 runs.
Delhi best
Delhi emerged overall champions in the ITF Taekwon-do meet held at Khudiram Anushilan Kendra recently. Siddhanth Gambhir of Karnataka and Jyotsna Singh were adjudged the best boy and girl in the competition.
