Poisoned for colour TV dowry
A 26-year-old homemaker, Pratima Mondal, was allegedly forced to consume poison by her in-laws at Babupara, in Barrackpore, for failing to bring a colour television set in her dowry. According to police, Pratima, married two years ago, was found dead at her in-laws’ on Thursday morning. Neighbours suspected foul play, as there was froth in the mouth. Her husband Subhas and mother in-law Sandhya have been arrested.
Railway job scam arrest
Sourav Pal was arrested at 27/1 Waterloo Street on Thursday in connection with the Railway Recruitment Board fraud case. Police announced that with his arrest, the entire gang had been rounded up. Five persons had been arrested earlier — two masterminds from Calcutta and three associates from Bihar. Investigations have revealed that the gang used to take Rs 1 lakh to Rs 1.5 lakh from unemployed youth, promising them jobs in the railways. They used fake Railway Recruitment Board documents to convince their victims and even organised a false medical test in a private clinic. The gang would then hand the victims forged appointment letters and disappear.
Unnatural death
An unidentified woman, aged about 40, consumed acid near the CIT servants’ quarters in Rabindra Sarobar around 1.40pm on Thursday. She was rushed to MR Bangur Hospital, where doctors pronounced her dead. An unnatural death case has been started.
Office ransack
Police detained a member of the Chhatra Bloc, the student wing of the Forward Bloc, for creating trouble inside the office of the president of the Primary Education Council at Karunamoyee on Thursday afternoon. According to the police, a group of students barged into the office and damaged the furniture.
Power protest
Members of the All Bengal Electricity Consumers Association demonstrated on Thursday afternoon in front of the office of the West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company Limited in Salt Lake, protesting the hike in the price of power.
