Dad’s plea saves beggar

New Delhi, Dec. 26 (PTI): A 20-year-old escaped punishment for begging after his father promised the court his son would reform.

Additional sessions judge Dinesh Kumar Sharma was hearing an appeal by Rajesh, caught begging in Delhi and convicted by a magistrate in October. He was directed to be detained for a year in a certified institution for training and rehabilitation.

In his appeal against the order, Rajesh said he had admitted his offence after a welfare officer told him he would be released if did so. Sharma turned down his plea.

Rajesh’s father then made a tearful appeal for leniency, keeping in mind his son’s age. He promised that Rajesh would give up begging. The court relented.
