Trinamul & CPM clash, police fire

Santiniketan, Dec. 26: Police fired to disperse warring CPM and Trinamul Congress supporters in Birbhum’s Nanoor today, injuring two of them.

Bapi Mondal, 24, who took a bullet in his head, was admitted to Burdwan Medical College and Hospital. Sheikh Mantu, 22, is in Bolpur Subdivisional Hospital

CPM supporters Maher Ali Sha, 23, and Bhagyadhar Mondal, 28, were injured by bombs.

The police said the two parties had been engaged in an intense turf war and the latest trouble started on Monday when an alleged CPM mob hurled bombs at Takora-Basapara village, 230km from Calcutta.

Around 10am today supporters of both parties used bombs indiscriminately. The po-lice were attacked when they tried to intervene.

In 2000, CPM goons had allegedly killed 11 Trinamul supporters in Nanoor.

Trinamul’s Nanoor president Sona Chowdhury accused the CPM of denying her party supporters jobs under the rural employment guarantee scheme. CPM district leader Dilip Ganguly denied the charge.
