Corporate tips for techies

Siliguri, Dec. 24: Jalpaiguri Government Engineering College will sign an MoU with Cognizant Technology Solutions (CTS), a major IT company, on Friday to help its students acquire proficiency in English and communication skills.

“They have to adjust to a shift from college campus to a corporate office almost overnight. This puts many of them in an awkward position,” said Swapan Sengupta, the in-charge of the placement cell of the college. “Considering this problem, we thought of providing them with necessary training to improve their communication skills and personality.”

CTS has agreed to train third and final-year students. Senior officials of the company, Sengupta said, would be here to sign the agreement.

When contacted in Calcutta, CTS officials confirmed that a tie-up was being worked out, but refused to divulge any details.

On Friday, the college will also open a central computer laboratory on the campus. “We have computers in every department, hostels and at the faculty quarters, all connected to a central server,” Sengupta said. “Added to this infrastructure, a central computer lab would be set up with 125 computers.”

Students of the college, belonging to any department or the faculty, can avail of facilities at the laboratory. “The latest software that we bring in will be run in this lab before they are loaded in other departments,” a professor of the college said.

Plans are also afoot to allow other educational institutions to use the central lab. “The rates to be charged from these institutions are yet to be decided,” Sengupta said.
