Mission moon

Puducherry, Dec. 24 (PTI): Chandrayaan-I, India’s planned mission to the moon, is estimated to cost around Rs 400 crore, the director of the Physical Research Laboratory, Ahmedabad, J.N. Goswami, said today.

drayaan-I is expected to be launched in April. A major part of the equipment has been indigenously designed, developed and fabricated. Goswami expressed hope that the mission would be able to get full pictures of the chemical components of the moon.

Aircraft crash

Panaji (PTI): A single-seater Sea Harrier fighter aircraft of the Indian Navy crashed at Dabolim airport here but the pilot bailed out safely. This led to a suspension of operations in the airport. This is the third major crash of a Sea Harrier.

Zoo encounter

Patna (PTI): A man who clambered into a tiger enclosure at the Patna zoo and escaped with injuries has been booked for attempted suicide. Sudhir Yadav, 25, had entered a lion’s cage in 2007 and escaped death by a whisker. In March this year, he had jumped into a tiger enclosure and was again rescued.

Kerala banks

Thiruvananthapuram (PTI): Kerala was on Monday declared a “total banking state”, providing at least one bank account for every household by Union minister of state for finance Pawan Kumar Bansal. Kerala is the third state to achieve the status after Himachal Pradesh and Goa.

Ground crack

Udhagamandalam (PTI): People from some places in and around this town in Tamil Nadu were evacuated by officials after cracks appeared on the ground as well as in a number of houses followed by a loud noise on Monday. Officials are conducting an investigation to determine the cause of the cracks.

Suicide

Mumbai (PTI): A middle-aged builder allegedly committed suicide by shooting himself at his residence here on Monday. Rizwan Lakdawala shot himself in front of his father.
