Second Honda bike plant

New Delhi, Dec. 24: Honda Motorcycle Scooter India (HMSI) is planning to set up a second plant here as it expects its annual sales to touch 1.2 million units by March 2011.

According to Shinji Aoyama, president and CEO of HMSI, the company will take a final decision on the second plant in 2009.

“Our existing plant at Manesar will operate at full capacity of 1.2 million units per annum by 2010-11 and we will require a second plant here to meet the market demand beyond that,” Aoyoma said.

He said the company would require at least two years to conduct a feasibility study for a new plant and plans to start the process by 2009.

At the Auto Expo in New Delhi next month, the Japanese two-wheeler company will showcase a gearless scooter made specifically for Indian roads. While the scooter will be launched by February-end, the company plans a new motorcycle during the first half of the next financial year.

“HMSI has jointly developed a product with Honda Japan specifically for the Indian market. We would unveil the product at the auto expo followed by a national launch in February,” Aoyoma said.

During the current financial year, HMSI expects its sales to cross 8.8 lakh units. Last fiscal, it sold around 7.15 lakh units. In the April-November period of the current fiscal, the company sold 6.03 lakh two-wheelers.
