Basu hauls up Bloc for rally

Calcutta, Dec. 24: Jyoti Basu today rapped the Forward Bloc for holding a public meeting in Nandigram on its own and blaming the CPM for the violence there.

“I don’t understand why (Bloc state secretary) Ashok Ghosh is doing this…3,500 of our supporters were evicted from their homes and some of our people were killed. I didn’t find them (Bloc leaders) visiting Nandigram then or hear them expressing grief,” Basu said at the CPM district conference in North 24-Parganas.

Without referring to the CPM’s bloody recapture of Nandigram, Basu expressed regret over “some clashes” and the death of “some people”.

“There was no law and order. The administration could not enter the area. I wished to see Nandigram’s return to Bengal before my death,’’ the party patriarch said amid applause, virtually putting his seal of approval on the “recapture”.

“We made some mistakes and we will mend our ways. But peace has returned now and all parties can hold their rallies there,” he added.

Ghosh had yesterday said apologies were useless. “Will a mother get back her son?”

Basu voiced concern about “increasing golmaal (trouble) within the Left Front. “RSP and Bloc leaders visited me when I was indisposed. I told them we formed the front together through years of struggle. ‘Would you like to break it down?’ I told Biman (Bose, the state CPM secretary and front chief) to sort out the disputes.’’

Ghosh said: “We want front unity, too, but for the right purpose.”

Modi win ‘terrible’

Basu described Narendra Modi’s return to power as a “terrible (bhayankar) incident” and blamed the Congress for it. But he assured Sonia Gandhi’s party that the Left would not rock her boat at the Centre.
