Rules don’t bend for Bowden

Melbourne: Umpire Billy Bowden may be able to walk into grounds in New Zealand at will, but he couldn’t get past the security at the MCG on Sunday.

“I’m not complaining... I didn’t come with my venue access card and, so, I’ve got to return to the hotel,” Bowden told The Telegraph as he hailed a cab.

Pointing to the two security supervisors, Bowden said they’d done a “good” job.

The supervisors, for their part, explained: “We know who he is, but we didn’t want to set a bad precedent... After all, somebody can lodge a complaint... For us, everybody is equal.”

Bowden and Mark Benson are the on-field umpires for the first Test, which begins here on Boxing Day.
