Bengal axe Soham

Calcutta: In their do-or-die effort to save themselves from relegation, Ranji Trophy runners-up Bengal axed Soham Ghosh and brought in left-arm spinner Iresh Saxena in their XIV-member squad.

The hosts must win their last round Super League match against Andhra Pradesh that begins from Tuesday at Eden Gardens.

Medium-pacer Ashok Dinda is likely to come in for Sourav Sarkar, making it a three-pronged pace attack with Shib Shankar Paul and Ranadeb Bose.

The only tweaker in the XI will be off-spinner Priyankar Mukherjee, said coach Bharat Arun. “We’ve to anyhow win the match… The boys appear quite positive,” Arun said.

With one win (Orissa), three draws — UP (3 points), Punjab (1 point) and Baroda (3 points) and one loss versus Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh coach Syed Abid Ali is confident of a win over Bengal.

“If they are looking for a win to stay in the Elite group, we are keen for a semi-final berth with five points from this match… We’re just hoping to carry on the momentum.”

Bottom rung Bengal have eight points from five matches while Andhra, currently at No. 4 in the standings, have 12 from equal number of outings.
