In-law in shoot bid

Tamluk, Dec. 23: A 24-year-old homemaker lodged a police complaint tonight accusing her father-in-law of trying to shoot her.

Shobhasree Dinda, a resident of Mahishadal Rathtala, about 115km from Calcutta, alleged that Gokul Chandra Dinda had fired at her from his licensed gun but missed. The police said Shobhasree’s relationship with husband Goutam, 30, had been strained since the past few months.

Midnapore: Inspector-general of prisons B.D. Sharma on Saturday visited Midnapore Central Jail, where 30 CPI (Maoist) activists are lodged, to review the security arrangements in the wake of the Chhattisgarh jailbreak.

Around 100 imprisoned Maoists had snatched their guards’ guns and fled along with 200 other inmates on December 16.

Bike crash

Midnapore: Shankar Singh, a 50-year-old farmer, was killed when a truck hit his motorbike on National Highway 6 near Debra, about 110km from Calcutta, on Sunday. Witnesses alleged that the truck had suddenly picked up speed to escape a traffic constable asking for a bribe.

Krishnagar: The Nadia health administration will start a clinic next month to counsel girls who have just reached puberty.

Calcutta: Manindra Chandra Banerjee has been elected the state president of the Indian Medical Association. Amitabha Bhattacharya and Sanjoy Banerjee were re-elected secretary and treasurer.
